Default Same Shared Dimension - 03-13-2005 , 05:03 AM

I have two dimensions in my star schema model that are identical in every
way except name only and they join to two different columns in my fact
table.

To avoid duplication of work, I would like to somehow use the same shared
dimension to represent these dimensions in Analysis Services.

Does anyone know if/how this can be done?

Thanks
Glenn

you cant

You must create 2 time your dimension.
Just insure that you use views or aliases in the tables used in the second
dimension definition, because you'll have some problems in your cube if the
same table is used twice.

But it's worth noting that you can use a dimension in multiple roles
with the new Analysis Services 2005:

Analysis Services 2005 adds important new dimensional structures. Some
of these structures have odd names, but these names are common in the BI
literature.

• Role Playing: The dimension plays several roles depending on context.
For example, the [Time] dimension may be reused for [Order Date] and
[Ship Date]. In 2005, the role playing dimension is stored once and used
multiple times. Disk space and processing times are minimized.
