Default Rights to process a cube on an external server - 09-06-2006 , 07:18 PM

Hi,

I just wanted to know what rights as a user one would need in order
to edit/process a cube which is on an external 2005 Analysis Server.
Right now my user is part of the SQLServer2005MSOLAPUser$Machine
Name$MSSQLSERVER group on this server.
I am able to connect to thsi server through SQL Server Management
Studio., but I dont see any analysis services databases under it.

Thanks

Hi,

Have you created a Role for this user on the cube that they wish to access
and then made their windows account a Role Member?

Hi,

I am a newbie to Analysis Services, I know how to create a
role for the user on the cube however how would I make a the windows
account a role mumber.

I mean I am not able to see the entire databse on an external analysis
server would the above suggestion resolve it.

Thanls

Hi,

For yourself, if you are the server administrator, just make sure your login
is added to the Local "Administrators" group in windows. This should give
you full access to SSAS unless the SSAS property "Security \
BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmins" is set to false (which it shouldn't be unless
someone has changed it fro the default).

For your users, create roles in the SSAS Database to give them access to the
cube. There is a "Roles" folder under the SSAS Database. Create a new Role
here and then set such properties as "Membership" (i.e. the windows group
that contains your users) and "Datasources", "Cubes" etc to define the scope
of access to these objects (i.e. process cube, read cube, view definition
etc).

I would suggest reading up on security in BOL as it's all in there but far
to much to dive into here!

Hope that the small advice above helps.
