Default Reporting Service role on Analysis Service - 04-15-2004 , 05:23 AM

Hi OLAP Gurus,

I have just read about MS SQL Reporting Services (MSRS), and the data source
can be :
- Database (including all OLEDB and ODBC compliant )
- MS Analysis Services OLAP Cubes

The question is :
in what role that MSRS will fit in OLAP ?
Just as OLAP Client software ? or as OLAP Portal ?

In displaying/analyzing MSAS Cube, how is Reporting Services compared to
Crystal Analysis ?

Thanks for any info,
Trist

Well, RS does support an OLAP Datasorce, and you put an MDX query into it.
However I found it to be rather confining and very picky about the data.
Not only that it seems to be slow at executing the MDX Queries. There are
however ways around this by creating views and such in SQL Server. But
overall RS isn't a bad product and eventually will be as good or better then
Crystal.

That's my two cents anyways.

Hi,

MS Reporting Services can be used as platform for standard reporting
for both relational and olap data. For more adhoc analysis you can
just click on the standard views in MS Reporting Services to start for
example the web client of Panorama NovaView BI to have all slice and
dice available.

You can also use the MS Reporting Services functionality in Panorama
NovaView web client where you can use the Actions functionality of
Microsoft Analysis Services to start MS Reporting Services views with
paramaters.

With the MS Reporting Services Wizard of Panorama NovaView you can
very easy add OLAP views in MS Reporting Services reports.

On our website www.gmsbv.nl you will find more info regarding MS
Analysis Services, MS Reporting Services and integration with Cizer
Software and Panorama Software.

Regards,
Marco
