Default Remote Connection from Excel - 07-26-2006 , 10:09 PM

Hi everyone,

I've read most of the post dealing with remote connections but I still
cannot figure out where my problem lies.....

What I'm trying to do...
- Make simple Pivot Tables with cubes as external data sources

Error message from Excel: Open Connection failed, unable to open connection,
unspecified error

The SQL Server is hosted by a different company, so the only way I can
access the cubes is remotely. I made sure that port 2725 and port 1433 is
open on their firewall. The SQL Server version is 8.00.2039 (2000,Standard
Edition) running on Windows Server 2003. I can sucessfully use the
relational database as external data source but not the cubes.

Do I need a special setup of Analysis Services, or any special settings to
be able to use the cubes as external data sources?

Thanks,
Raihaan

if your are not on the same network and you don't share the same NT domain
or active directory.
then you'll suffer authentication issue.

if the target is AS2000 enterprise edition or AS2005 std or Ent. edition,
you can use the HTTP protocol to access the cube.
in this case you can use the Basic authentication and then the user will be
prompted for a login / password.

you can also try to setup a user account on the AS server which is the EXACT
same login password of your current window user.

Hi Jeje,
Thanks a lot for the tip. Created an account with the exact same credentials
on the server solved my problem. I had to add the user to the "OLAP
Administrators" group though.

Cheers,
