As you say if the dimension is a shared dimension the grouping property is
disabled in Cube editor, but in that case you should have it enabled in
Dimension editor.
Anyway you can set this property to automatic only if:

It's a changing dimension;
It's not the first o last level of the dimension;
Every level after the one with "Grouping=Automatic" has Unique Member Keys;
