This is for a simpler case so it may not be helpful for this problem,
but nevertheless I thought there might be people looking fo answers to
this kind of problem in a similar situation.

I have a win 98 box and a windows 2000 box on the same workgroup. The
win 98 box gave me the same error message as described above, but when I
used the same user name and password as is on the windows 2000 box, it
passed the authentication without a problem.
