Dear Gurus,

I am working for a local bank implementing a financial statistical system.
We proposed to use SQL Server 2000 Analysis Server but the clients want to
use Cognos Powerplay for data analysis. Can Cognos Powerplay connect
directly to SQL Server 2000 Analysis Server without using Cognos Impromptu
as adaptor?

thanks in advance.

Steven

Hi,

There are some "advanced" features in MS OLAP Cognos doesn't support... i.e.
Actions and Drill Through. Thats why I don't recommend using Cognos wiht MS
OLAP... For me it's a good marketing instrument for Cognos to get into
projects with Microsoft backend technology... But when they're in, they try
to sell their own stuff which is very expensive... Cognos really got into
trouble with Microsoft here in Germany because they got leads from MS and
kicked them out later...

Steven,

Yes it can. You will need to use the PowerPlay Connect tool to set to
establish a link to Analysis Services. Once you have created the stub
file using Powerplay with Analysis Services is fairly much the same as
using Powerplay with a transformer created cube.

Somewhre in your Cognos documentation you should find a guide called
"OLAP Server Connection Guide".

Regards

Rob

PowerPlay is strong on graphical design of Olap reports. But the client does
not support writing MDX select statements, which is important for some
advanced reports. The need to configure a connection file(Power Play
Connect) for each new cube is to complicated and may require an
administrator. Powerplay is expensive and below average in supporting
important Analysis Services features. It is not my first choice.

Thanks a lot for all the response. It is not our choice to tell the client
not to use Powerplay as they had purchased over 200 plus licenses quite a
while ago.
But Excel Olap is not able to perform something as flexible as Powerplay in
ad-hoc data calculation. and
my boss initially thought Excel OLAP is powerfula and flexible as Powerplay.

Anyway, thanks a lot and I appreciate all the advice. Really helps me.

Hi Reg,

My client is using Windows 2000 Professional with Cognos Powerply version
6.6 or 6.0. I can't remember the version exactly. regarding that you have
enabled the user to use excel to connect to the cube, can the user create a
local cube from that connection? coz' my client is really
concern about the staff creating local cube to be copied home. the data is
confidential coz' my client is a bank. they only let the staff analyze data
not to bring the whole cube with confidential data home.

Steven,

i am in a similar situation to you and have found a variety of issues
connecting powerplay to AS cubes

Here are the top heartaches in my life

1. if some of your clients are on NT you might as well forget about using
the security roles in AS ( if you have clients on NT i will go into
detail)

2. It so sooooooooo slow

3. if you drill into a large dimension it will crash

4. in version 7 you have to enable access to MSOLAP and it is hidden in
its
config tool and only visible if you view advbanced features

5. to try make my life easier i have also enabled and showed all my users
how to use excel to connect to the cubes

6. on the box specs for version 7 is 512 mb of ram so if you have a issue
on
a pc with less ram dont ask cognos for help

Regards

Reg
