I'm running AS on XP home right now, how have you tried and failed? Are
you getting errors?

Yeah, everytime I try to connect to the server I get an error regarding not
being a member of the OLAP Administrators group or not accessing the
registry properly or something like that. Some kb article for Win2000 said
to make sure that the Remote Registry (something like that) service was
running, but I couldn't find it. I also thought that the problem was
related to not having groups in XP Home. But maybe, since you've got it
working (I assume you mean that you can go in and build cubes and such),
the problem is something else. I am running a named instance of SQL2000 --
I left MSDE (SQL7) as the local server -- I wonder if that could be it?

Thanks for your help,
Scott Edwards

Thanks, Ray -- that worked! Only now I can't browse any cubes I build - I
get "Unable to browse cube ___. Unspecified error." Any ideas?
BTW, how did you respond so fast? Do you have software that let's you know
when a response to a usenet message is posted? (that would be cool)
Thanks again,
Scott

Go into services and make sure the MSOLAP service is running under a
proper account (usually local admin for XP home), then make sure the
service is started before you connect to AS. I've noticed I get a weird
error when I try to connect to AS if the service is not running
(non-intuitive)

Did you install MS Office *after* you installed Analysis Services? If so,
you may have ran into a known issue with Office replacing some of the rll's
but not all.

Perform an Office Repair operation (it is one of the options when you try to
re-install the software). It may fix the "unspecified error" problem.

I just wanted you to make sure you had permissions to browse the cube.
You can see this by right-clicking database roles and choosing manage

I ran into this problem at school the other day, yes, try and apply SP3
for AS and I bet it will work.

I'd suggest upgrading to SP3. Encountered numerous problems of the
sort you've experienced after installing SS2K and AS (both SP2) on a
notebook with XP Home & Office XP. Virtually all problems disappeared
after installing SP3 (believe steps were: removed SS2K and AS,
installed SS2K, installed SS2K SP3, installed AS, installed AS SP3.
You may not need to take such painful steps, however.)

Single remaining problem deals with installing the BI Accelerator. See
my 7/30 posting "BI Accelerator Install Error".

No, I actually installed A.S. AFTER installing OfficeXP;however, that
appears to cause problems too (!) (see KB article Q292295), but
supposedly only when accessing cubes from Excel. I'm wondering if the
problem is that I left MSDE 1.0 on the machine, so it is designated as
the "local" SQL server, instead of the SQL2000 server, which I made a
named instance. Or maybe I just need to update A.S. to SP3...

TFTH,
Scott

SP3 for AS fixes quite a few problems with connecting, etc. That would
be a good next step
