Default Programming OLAP Frontend - 12-02-2005 , 03:39 AM

I have created an OLAP system with MS SQL Server 2000 and Analysis
Services.

I want to create a OLAP-Frontend with .NET that is only used in our
company.

My problems:

1) Should I make a Windows or a Web application
2) I need good tools for .NET to display data (table) and charts

1) What are the advantages/disadvantages of Window / Web Application
2) Tools

Web Components 11: Is ist possible to buy OWC11 without Office 2003
There is a free version of OWC 11, but the user than can t move
dimensions/measures

Dundas Chart or Chart FX OLAP, HierCube, Snowflake, Crystal Analysis
etc.

Who has experience in Programming with this components ?

Please help !

Thanks
aaapaul

If you move to SQL Server 2005, you will have access to the Report Builder
in Reporting Services. This is a web based component that will allow your
users to access a report model created by you, based on your OLAP cube. You
can create different report models for different purposes, and let the users
go wild with ad hoc reports. (They can be saved to the Report Manager web
page too.)

Alternatively, check out DSP (Decision Support Panel) Portal Edition.
THey've created a SharePoint based solution, with a few desktop applications
for viewing cube data. You can use DSP with Windows SharePoint Services,
meaning it's free if you're running a web server on Windows 2003 server.

The advantage of using a web application is that at least a portion of the
cube will be readable from all computers with access to the solution, not
just from the computers where the win app is installed. To create reports,
you might need to have some kind of Win App. But when it comes to cube data,
you probably want someone with a bit of skills to do the report creation, so
that might not be too bad anyway.

We have found that installing OWC11 alone does not work. Yes, some of
the functionality is there, but not all.

We install OWC10 first, then OWC11, and everything works. We've done
this many times on a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP
Pro, with nothing else installed.

Proclarity and Panorama have always been the 2 most used front-ends I have
heard of, there are about a half dozen or so Excel add-ins (xlcubed.com is
my favorite). I did a quick look at Dundas Chart (OLAP version) and it
looked quite good. DSP has also been around for a while. Can't comment on
the others you mention.

My two cents,
