Default Pre-create "Future" Partitions - 05-18-2004 , 09:00 PM

So, I'm working with a client explaining partitions and discussing options
for managing the addition of partitions on an as needed basis. They ask
"Why can't we just create partitions for the next 5 years and let them be
empty until data arrives?" If we partition on months, this would mean
possibly having 40+ empty partitions with slicer settings of months in
2005-2009. Does anyone see a down side to doing this? I've always
architected partitioned cubes based on the data that is currently available
and put solutions in place to either automatically create and manage
partitions over time or use a "sliding window" solution that keeps the
number of partitions constant over time but moves data through the
partitions from "newest" to "oldest".

Thoughts? Thanks...
