Default [Object Does Not Exist] with virtual dimension - 12-06-2004 , 05:09 AM

Hi,

I've a problem with some cubes that are built using virtual dimensions. When
I process them, I get the following error: Analysis Server Error: Internal
Error [Object Does Not Exist].

I found a document in MS KB ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821103 ) and I
verified that I'm in the situation described in that article: the error is
caused by a bug in the Analysis Services.Unluckily there's not a direct link
to a fix, even if MS suggests to contact his support to obtain one. Has
anybody already got this fix? I must resolve this problem as soon as
possible, moreover I don't want to pay for MS support, since the cause of
all is a bug in the analysis Services.

Thank you very much for your help,

Marzio

Thank you Michael, in fact yesterday, befor reading your post, I contacted MS
and obtained the fix, as I wrote in the previous message with the same thread
(sorry for the duplicate thread, I made a mistake with my offline news reader
configuration). The service has been efficient and kind, also free.

Anyway the problem is still there, even if my scenario is totally equal to
the hone described in the KB article. I'm investigating on it, now I suspect
it's caused by the use of "datepart" functions to define the virtual
dimensions members on both dimenion levels, since I found a post of a guy
having the same problem with a "week" dimension.

I'll keep you informed about possible solutions I find.

Thank again,

Marzio

Hi Marzio,

Thanks for the prompt updates!

Have you tried WORKAROUND in KB:821103?

- Use a regular dimension instead of a virtual dimension.

or

- Increase the value of VLDMThreshold to a value sufficient to prevent the
dimension that the virtual dimension depends on from being offloaded to the
VLDM.

Based on my scope, error "Object does not Exist" might also display when
processing a partition when there is a non Changing dimension and a virutal
dimension based off of it. Because a member was deleted from the non
Changing dimension and was Incrementaly updated. If there is an Virtual
Dimension based off of this dimension the member property will be removed
from the dimension. When processecing the partition, Analysis Services will
check the existence of the members and will find this one missing. And
return the Object does not exist error and list the member property that is
missing.

If so, you will have to do one of the following to resolve this problem
1. Remove the Facts from the fact table that have the id of the deleted
member.
2. Add back to the Dimension the member ID.
3. Fully process the dimension.

Looking at the nature of this issue, if the hotfix cannot fix this issue,
it might require intensive troubleshooting steps from a Microsoft Support
Professional through Microsoft Product Support Services. If you'd still
like to continue working via the newsgroup, I want to set your expectations
that the issue might take a long time to narrow down. During the course of
troubleshooting, we may redirect you to PSS if required.

Thank you for your patience and corporation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are always here to be of
assistance!
