Default The number of partitions in a cube - 07-27-2005 , 02:48 AM

I have a cube, partitioned by region and quarter. The total partitions reach
70. I found that it takes a long time to save cube if I made any change. And
the cube behave weird recently. Cound the number of partition cause the
problem? Thanks.

At 70 partitions you might see a slowdown of Analysis Mangaer starting up;
you definitely will see it with a couple hunderd. However the slowdown
should be at AM startup (when DSO is building all of its objects). I would
be surprised if the slowdown was *only* happening when you saved the cube.
Althought that might be the first place.

When you say "long time" what do you mean? 10-20 seconds or 1-2 min?

Thanks Dave. I found some of my cubes reached 300 to 500 partitions. Yes, the
starting up is also slow. But saving cube schema sometimes takes forever -
about two hours to save.

It may be time for some more servers.
Having multiple cubes at that size is going to be very clumbersome long-term
for you.
I would recommend that you seriously think about some dedicated servers.
That's my 2 cents.

The Olap server, 4GB memory and 8 CPUs, is already dedicated server. However,
althought only one OLAP DB is in production. I have a coulpe of test OLAP DBs
in the server. SQL database is in other servers.
