Default Newbie simple question - 08-26-2005 , 12:23 PM

I would like to use the MS OLE DB Driver for OLAP, but on my PC where I've
installed SQL Server 2000 (and Analysis services), I don't see this in the
list of drivers in the ODBC Administration tool. Can you tell me what I need
to do to install it?

Thank you!
Jon

There is no such things under ODBC Admin tool. Not sure what you want to do.

Hi Joel,

We have a Business Intelligence reporting tool which does not integrate with
MS Analysis Services. This tool builds it's own "cubes" on the client for
slice and dice.

We would still like to make use of MS Analysis Services for olap, however,
and we need to make it integrate with the BI tool someway.

My idea was to use OpenRowset in SQL Server 2000 to create a view that would
return 2-d data sets from MDX queries. We could then use these views from
the BI tool for report generation and end-user analysis. Maybe you will
think that's a silly thing to do, but that's what we're toying with.

I'm looking at a training manual that one of my guys brought back from a
training session, and it's showing browsing OLAP cubes from Excel, and it
shows screen shots for creating "OLE DB Provider for OLAP Services" data
sources from what looks like the ODBC administrator.

Maybe what I'm trying to do is wrong-headed, and maybe "OLE DB Provider for
OLAP Services" won't return rowsets compatible with what can be accessed with
a SQL Server "OpenRowset" in a database view, but that's what I'm here to
find out!

Thanks!
Jon

Dear Jon,

Not sure if it can be useful for your problems. However, try this tool:

Thanks, Pamela ... your product looks very interesting, and I'll make sure to
check it out.

However, we're a rather large org, and we already have an investment in
Business Objects, so I'm still hoping to find a way to return the results
from an MDX query using an OLE DB provider with OpenRowset through a MS SQL
Server 2000 database view.

Anyone have an idea if that is possible?
Thanks!
Jon
