Default Newbie help - logging on - 02-21-2006 , 04:46 PM

I installed the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, but seem to have trouble
authenticating and loggin on to do anything.

I have heard you should run your OLTP and OLAP databases on separate
machines, so this one has JUST the OLAP services installed.

My question is, are you supposed to install SQL Server 2000 to control
security, and THEN install OLAP? Or does OLAP have its own security?

I know the regular database asks you to set the 'sa' login password during
installation, but I saw nothing similar for OLAP. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Analysis Services (the olap server) use the windows authentication.
there is no security integrated into AS, only Windows security is used.

you just have to create roles and associated Windows users / groups to these
roles to give access to your users.

Also, during the installatio of Analysis Services, a new security group is
created on the server, the "OLAP Administrators" group. any user in this
group can access AS using the admin. console.

Have you run the Surface Area Configuration tool? By default when SQL
2005 and AS 2005 are installed they only accept local connections. You
have to explicitly enable remote access.
