Default newbie: good book to start with? - 07-08-2003 , 04:15 PM

Hi all!

I'm new to OLAP, Analysis Services and all the related topics. I read some
articles and magazines - so now I can create a cube, I know about dimensions
and measures but my knowledge is very low and does not cover deeper details.
For this reason I'm looking for a good book to start with that covers all
necessary topics to understand all that OLAP stuff :-)

Any suggestions? Also, I am working with Office XP web components, are there
any good books?

Regards

Markus

Default good books to start with... - 07-09-2003 , 01:36 AM

Hi Markus,
as I have posted before:
If you are interested in olap in general, my hints are

1. Spofford, George. "MDX Solutions: With Microsoft
SQL Server Analysis Services". Wiley & Sons. New York,
2001.

2. Kimball, Ralph und Ross, Margy. "The Data
Warehouse Toolkit: The Complete Guide to Dimensional
Modeling". Wiley & Sons. 2nd ed. 2002.

3. Kimball, Ralph, Laura Reeves et.al. "The Data
Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit : Expert Methods for
Designing, Developing, and Deploying Data Warehouses",
John Wiley & Sons,1998

For first steps with AS I recommend

Jacobson, Reed. "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis
Services Step by Step", Microsoft Press,2000

It is a little shallow in the long run, but it provides a
good start into the subject.

You may also want to pick up a copy of MS SQL Server DTS
by Peterson. This is by far the most accessible tool for
porting your relational data into your warehouse. DTS
comes standard w/ the SQL Server install

Hi Lutz!

Thanks for your reply. IŽll have a look at the books. Are
there any newer
books or do you know if any will be released within the
next time?

Thanks

Markus
