Default New to BI and need some help - 08-07-2005 , 04:23 AM

Hi,

I am very new to the BI world and specifically OLAP technologies.
Honestly, I am overwhelmed

Many things to know and learn (and the job pressure tightens the time
more and more) and a lot of terminologies; Cube, Attributes,
Hierarchies, Measures, Measure Groups, Members, KPIs, Partitions,
Aggregations, Actions, Translations, Actions, MOLAP, ROLAP and now with
SQL Server 2005; UDM! ... HELP!

I would appreciate the experts help in pointing me to a decent book
that talks about the **OLAP technology itself-- and its different
components & terminologies. I don't mind if the book explains stuff
from a MS Analysis Services point of view but I **don't want** a book
that explains Analysis Services as a product.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Richard

Hello Richard,

There are a lot of boxes on Analysis Services 2000, the best one I have
come across is Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step
by OLAP Train and Reed Jacobson.

Check out: http://www.microsoft.com/MSPress/books/4076.asp

Also there are large amount of Web resources out there.

Check out this tutorial on SqlJunkies.com

Hope this is a good start for you, once you have the basics check out
MDX.

Also have a look at -

http://www.databasejournal.com/article.php/1459531

Other key names are Ralph Kimbal and Bill Inmon.

The above book was a good start for me when I started.

Hope all goes well.

MDX Solutions by George Spofford is an excellent book on MDX. I can't
recommend it enough.

Read first --

*Data warehouse toolkit* by Ralph Kimball to learn the star schema design
basics.

Then read --

*SQL Server 2000 DataWarehousing with Analysis Services* to get an overview
of Analysis Services

Then read --

*MDX solutions* by George Spofford to learn the crazy language of MDX

These are classics, and will get you started in the right direction.

HTH,

Jim
