Default New to Analysis Server - 01-13-2004 , 11:05 AM

I am given an immediate responsibility of administering
couple of Analysis servers in SQL 2K

Right now Analysis server is installed, the repository is
in Access database, and the customer has created cubes and
dimension.

What are all the stuff I have to do to Administer. I am
not involved in creatind cubes, or dimension are anything
etc...

1. Whether i need to archive (backup) the OLAP db
2. If so do i have to do it daily ?
3. Right now the cubes and files are backed directly to
tape since these files are not locked including the
repository mdb files...

4. What is the easiest way to restore OLAP db - from the
backup or the backup made by Tape...

Also what is the procedure to recover a corrupted OLAP db -
if something happens ?

I read BOL, but couldnt find out whether Archive of db is
necessary - Is there any startup whitepaper etc that tells
me what are the stuff i have to do...Please let me know

Thanks

SK

1) You certainly want one saved archive of (refreshed any time you make
structural changes).
2) Since all the cube data can be re-imported from rdbms (typically), it's
not a neccesity to do daily archives.

To restore corrupt DB (very rare, kudos to MS), restore the archive then
reprocess everything.

There's also a recently published whitepaper that should be helpful for you
as well.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Operations Guide

Sean,

Thanks for another informative MS Analysis Services paper. Am I correct
in assuming that OLAPScribe is the Word-based documentation tool that
you promised the group recently?

Quote:
Check the download center at www.microsoft.com around the end of the
week or
early next week. There is a tool that will be available that will
document
the structure of an AS database in a Word document. An announcement
will be
made in this newsgroup when the tool is available for download.

You should also document all of the objects in Analysis Services. For
example, you can use OLAP Scribe, which is a Microsoft Word template
that allows you to generate complete documentation of Analysis Services
using Decision Support Objects (DSO). You can obtain this template at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=22012.

Yes. That is it. Looks like you found it already on the download center.
We were in the process of formulating an announcement to the newsgroup of
its availability.
