Hi,
yesterday i have problems with starting the analysis service
MSSQLServerOLAPService'.
The error message is good described in Microsoft support page under BUG
13688:

Analysis Services Cannot Start and You Receive This Error Message:
"MSSQLServerOLAPService service terminated unexpectedly"

So i installed SP3 but the error still occours !!!

Who can help me ?

Hi Thomas,

I have got this a on a few occasions on various servers.
When upgrading the service pack, make sure that all the
clients PTS service pack is upgraded as well. This was
happening upto 20 times a day on one server. Upgrading all
of the clients PTS version took care of most of these
crashes. We still have the occasional one, but we mostly
ignore it.

I hope Yukon sorts all of this sort of crap out. Of at
least gives better messages.

Could you send in the mini dump to this alias, this crash should create a
mini dump this is available since sp3

Please check the dbhelp.dll if the dump is not created it must be 6.1.3.0,
or later and located in the analysis\bin folder. The mini dump should be
written in the analysis server\data folder as SQLDmpr0001.mdmp etc. If you
don't have the appropriate dbhelp.dll check sp3 of SQL server it should be
in there.

I worked off line with Thomas on this one. The crashing stack told us that
it was crashing on reading a poperty. This could be caused by corrupted AS
data so we cleaned those with this procedure.

-stop analysis server
-rename this crashing database folder (program files\Microsoft analysis
folder\DATA\olddatabase)
-start Analysis server
-full process of database

AS could start normally after that. I also told Thomas the most known
causes of corruption which are:

1. Antivirus Applications - You don't have to turn off the Antivirus if you
can configure it to not look at the Data or Bin folders.
2. Indexing Service - This service has been found to lock files and cause
corruption of the data files. Turn this service off.
3. Backup software - Make sure you schedule the backup of the data folder
and processing so the processes don't overlap.
