Default MSOLAP, HTTP, DMZ, Ports - 06-13-2004 , 09:40 AM

I wonder if someone can help, I'm trying to use office web components on a
web server in a DMZ with the Analysis Server on another machine behind the
firewall. This requires the use of the msolap.asp data pump as described in
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...l_datapump.asp
but I notice that the data pump used named pipes and there is no way I can
open netbios through the firewall. Can I get it to use TCP instead?

The article does indicate that I should install IIS on the Analysis server
and do HTTP through the firewall but I'm worried that performance will be a
dog.

Regards,
James Snape

Hi James,

I learned you do not want the data pump library can use a named pipe to
share information with the Analysis server.

As the article mentioned, "Analysis Services originally required for
Internet Information Services (IIS) to be installed on the same server,
because the data pump library used shared memory to communicate directly
with the Analysis server. With the release of Service Pack 3 (SP3) for SQL
Server 2000 Analysis Services, however, the data pump library can also use
a named pipe to share information with the Analysis server. "

Without the named pipe, I am afraid you have to install the IIS and
Analysis Services on the same server and do HTTP through the firewall.

Thanks

This is firewall between DMZ and internal network, not the firewall between
wild Internet and DMZ. You are still afraid to open netbios ports ?

In Yukon you can

That is if you put Analysis Server inside DMZ as opposed to keeping it on

Hi Mosha,

The firewall in question is the one between the internal network and the DMZ
(not the internet facing one). My customers are mainly banks and they have
enterprise security standards that prohibit NetBIOS though any firewall.

OK, I have another solution for you, but I have to tell you upfront that I
am not sure that it will work, since it involves 3rd party non Microsoft
component.

The idea is to run XMLA SDK on the Web server in DMZ, and configure it to
connect through TCP/IP to the Analysis Server in internal network.
Then, there is a company called Digital Aspects (www.digitalaspects.com )
which sells OLEDB for OLAP driver which works over XMLA SDK. I am not sure
whether it will work with OWC (it should), I know about one big enterprise
customer who uses their staff with Proclarity and it works pretty good.
