Default MSAS Security features - 05-17-2004 , 01:00 AM

Hi friends !!!

I'm exploring MSAS security features. Underlying OS is Windows 2000.
Pls do look into this problem and suggest...

I've created a couple of local users (in Windows 2000), say, Mark and
Mary. Now I've Full Restricted "Customer" dimenion for Mark and
"Store" dimension for Mary. However, when I log in as Mark/Mary and
try to use this cube, I get a messge that Mark/Mary does not belong to
OLAP Administrators group. They are normal users who should be able to
brose the cube, so I've not included them in the Admin group. How to
enable these logins to view the cube?

Furthermore, keeping aside Mark/Mary logins (which are local users
I've created), I've used my colleagues' logins who are in the same
corporate domain as I do. When I log in with my colleague's ID, I get
the same message. How can I specify someone as a normal user of the
cube? How can I enable them to browse the cube?

Kind suggestions please.

Thanks in advance,

What client tool do you use to browse the cube?

Hi there !

Thanks for your response.

I'm using the default browser that comes with the MSAS...I mean the
Browser that comes for the Administrator. Infact, this holds true with
the Excel 2000 client (Pivot table) as well.

Do you mean we need a specialized client tool (like
Panorama/ProClarity) to experience these secutiry features?

Also, kindly let me know how I can experience the usage of Named Sets.
I've created a Named Set, but I cant drag it onto the Data Grid/Slicer
area. Anyway, I can demonstrate this?

Thanks a ton for your kind help,

The cube browser is only available to OLAP Administrators since only they
can run Analysis Manager.
You are going to have to use some other client application.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply.

Could you pls let me know if there's any client tool free trial
version that I can download. I'm giving a presentation on MS Analysis
Services. Demonstrating Security features is very important to
convince them on how efficient and cost-effective this tool is.

Btw, can I demonstrate the security features using Excel 2000 client?

Best Regards,
Srikanth

Sorry, I don't track it at all.
An obvious possiblity would be to use Office Web Components if you have a
license for MS Office.
Other than that, check out the MSFT DWA web site for client-tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/partners/DWA/query.asp
Many of the tool vendors participate on this newsgroup also, so they might
jump in here to provide pointers as well.
