Default MS OLE OLAP Provider 8 driver - 09-28-2005 , 04:04 PM

Hello All,

Does anybody know where I can get an installable copy of the OLAP Provider 8
driver used with connecting to cubes via Excel? I've tried installing the
latest MDAC but that didn't help.

thanks,

Not sure if this is the only avenue but I installed the Analysis Services
client tools from the SQL server 2000 CD-Rom. Also apply at least SP3A

Thanks Dave.
Did you do this so that you could administer AS or so that you can access
the cubes? The reason I ask is I need to have my users install the driver on
their clients. The problem is if the users use any other driver other than
version 8 via Excel, they can actually see cubes that they don't have access
to but are unable to open them (probably because of security). But if the
user has version 8 driver, they only see cubes they have access to and can
successfully retrieve the data.

Actually it was sort of two-fold. I searched high and low finding the
question asked a lot but no real answers. The main reason was so I could
access the cubes through Excel. As I said there may be other ways. I just
found this article and maybe this is your solution.

You need to install Pivot Table Services (PTS). I think a flavour of
this comes with Office XP and above which sometimes confuses people as
some clients do not need to install anything to connect to AS.

PTS comes in two flavours PTSFull.exe, which includes a copy of the
latest MDAC and PTSLite.exe which is just the PTS components. You will
find a copy of these files on the SQL Server CD and updated version come
with each service pack for Analysis Services.

As a best practise you should use the version of PTS that matches the SP
on your server.

OK, super. I found the two files and will use the ones in the \SP3A
directory. Thanks very much.
