Default MS OLAP and ESSbase OLAP - 10-29-2003 , 10:03 AM

Hi,

We are using, or trying to use, hyperion Essbase since a few month, and to
be honest, I'm planning to switch over to ms analysis services.

It seems easier to implement, it's Java based and it's much much much more
simple to install, manage and administer
(for those who tried to used the hyperion essbase/report/anlyer suite,
remember how it's fun to implement the four or five user login by user, or
the consistency between each component, each with a differrent java or
tomcat version...)
The Excel pivot table acces to Olap is a nice thing too, compared to the
essbase excel addin

The problem is that in spite of all these difficulties we manage to install
it and our developpers are almost finished, so now I have to explain to the
managers that it will be easy to change the technology... I know it won't,
but they don't

So I need to recreate the olap cube and I was hoping there was a way to
import at least the structure from an essbase application, that would help a
lot.

The loading is made from a SQLServer datawarehouse with a hyperion tool, so
I'll need to recreate the loading with DTS
And the upcoming SQLServer Reporting Services will be enough to replace the
hyperion report tool (no reports have been yet created)

Basically, if I have to recreate the whole stuff from scrach, it will not
not happen, so please, tell me there is something to help me.

Thanks in advance,
Christophe Niel

Microsoft Analysis Services is most certainly NOT Java based!

Hi Christophe,

I have heard that Symmetry Corp (www.symcorp.com), expert on both MS AS and
Hyperion Essbase, developped something that can ease the migration process
from EssBase to MS Analysis Services.
But, I am not sure about it, you should perhaps check with them.

It certainly has been done. Comshare, now Geac, provides that as
built-in functionality of their MPC budgeting product. I have used
that sucessfully in one of my budgeting projects.

FYI it's pretty darn easy to manually build AS cubes seeing as you already
have the hard part -- the relational warehouse. Depending on #dims and
#cubes, and assuming no calc scripts, it could be a task measured in hours,
not days.
