Default Microsoft Acquires ProClarity - 04-05-2006 , 08:47 AM

I have received the news that Microsoft acquires ProClarity:
http://www.tdwi.org/News/display.aspx?ID=7902
While expecting Excel 2007 to be OLAP client, what does this
acquisition mean?

this acquisition mean that Microsoft will provide a real OLAP tool!
Excel is NOT an olap tool, and today MS doesn't have any web based OLAP
application.
So Microsoft will fullfill a big hole and a long waiting need: Web OLAP!
(if MS keep the web based version)

my questions are:
how the product will be packaged?
what about 3rd party software?
any new API in mind?
and... any change in the price?

Jéjé

Out of interest more than anything, why do you say that Excel is not an OLAP
tool?

Because Excel is a clunky almost useless tool when compared to the
competition. ProClarity, Cognos et al...

I would die before trying to build complex olap analysis in Excel.

Hi,

For analysis a webfrontend like Panorama NovaView or ReportPortal is
great !

For printing a webbased solution is till a crime. For printing KPIs on
1 A4 as Management Info Report I use just the same OLAP cubes but with
Pivot tables and synchronize the tables to have free format report
filled in with data anywhere from 10 OLAP Cubes.

Regards, Marco

You may also want to try BIWeb from BIPartner. Great simple front end
reporting tool being used by many with some very interesting little
features. Great for budgeting and forecasting as well and the directiion
they are going could prove interesting for all in the longer run. This tool
will not just be for Analysis Services and SQL Server reporting but could
provide a new direction .............. mmmm..........????? Reporting
Services reports are also included.
