I'm aware of the performance articles but what is "normal" server physical
memory ? 2 gb ?

Virtual memory:

On normal 32bit system - 2 GB
On 32bit system with adding /3GB flag to boot.ini - 3 GB
On AMD64 - 32 bit process can be made to get 4 GB
On 64bit system - virtually unlimited
