Default Member properties vs Virtual Dimension - 03-02-2005 , 04:01 AM

Hello!

We have several dimensions 'Stores' (1 level, 300+ members), 'Items' (1
level, 30000+), 'Customers' (2 levels, 10000+), 'Vendors' (2 levels, 5000+)
and so on ....
Also for 'Items' dimension we have several member properties, such as:
'Collection', 'Category', 'BasePrice', 'Brand', 'Item name',
'ItemNameInGerman', ....

Now we use Excel as OLAP-client tool and it is very usefull to display items
(and member properties) on rows, for example:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ITEM001 | COLLECTION1 | CATEGORY1 | 10.90 | BRAND1 | .......
ITEM002 | COLLECTION2 | CATEGORY2 | 12.78 | BRAND1 | .......

My question is:
If I would use virtual dimension on member properties - it may cause
dramatical impact on performance (unnesesary aggregations or slowly response
times in Excel) ?

Is ProClarity (we consider to use it as front-end tool) support member
properties?

Thank you!

Of coures, virtual dimension can slow response time when it is referenced
because it needs run-time calculation.

Proclarity supports member property. If I remember right, desktop version
shows the member properties as screen tip not embedded column. It means that
available member properties appear when you move the mouse over a dimension
member. And web version shows member properties on the separate pane space
when you click a dimension member.

So displaying member properties is not in the same way you mentioned. But
other advantage can be expected. For example, you can find members by their
properties in the Advanced Find Wizard.
