Default MDX Scripting - 09-18-2005 , 01:27 PM

Is there any good source for MDX scripting in SQL 2005 (besides BOL)?

Richard Tkachuk's site at
http://www.sqlserveranalysisservices.com/default.htm and Mosha's blog
(http://www.sqljunkies.com/WebLog/mosha/) have some examples, but nothing
like a proper introduction. The MSDN whitepaper at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/defaul...IMDXSMSS05.asp
is probably the best place to start but is out of date in at least one
important respect - attribute hierarchies in the September CTP work in a much
more intuitive fashion.

<Shameless plug>
Otherwise, place your order for the second edition of 'MDX Solutions'
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...192185-2564434
which has a chapter on the subject.
</Shameless plug>

I use the free Excel 2002/2003 Plugin for Analysis Services. It let's
you create pivot tables and other OLAP views, and then view the MDX
query that generated the view.

Thanks Chris, I probably will get this book when comes out. Was a
single chapter enough to cover the topic of MDX scripting?

It's a big chapter! To be honest, our intention for this edition was only to
provide an introduction to the subject - in future editions I would imagine
that we'd need two or three chapters to do it justice.
