Default Lack of Memory Error Msg - 11-25-2003 , 05:49 AM

Hi,

We are using analysis services sp3, 2x2Gig processors,
4gig memory with OLAP upper memory limit set to 2800.

Problem - Every 4 or so days, when rebuilding the largest
dimension (1.6 millsion members) the job fails because of
a lack of memory. A hard re-boot of the server fixes
this for 4 to 5 days and then it requires another re-
boot. Something is not releasing memory.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Paul

Yes, SQL doesn't release memory.
The thing is that SQL server won't realease memory until another application
needs it and even then...

You could, do a simple restart of service, but this also isn't the solution.

Peace,
Andrej

Hi Paul,

Could you monitor the memory usage for msmdsrv.exe (task manager, mem
usage or perfmon, processes, msmsdsrv.exe private bytes) escpecially before
processing and after processing and see if it release memory. We are aware
of a mem leak we fixed recently in AS.

The leak we fixed was because of usages of parent/child dimenions with
member properties. Do you have these? If yes let me know so that I can send
you the fix please let me know where to send it to.

Regards,
Bas

Hi,

It is a parent/child dimension with 8 member properties at
the lowest level.

A fix to this would be great as the constant rebooting is
driving users up the wall!

email Paul.scott (AT) waterstones (DOT) co.uk - you'll need to zip
the file as the firewall will block it.

Thanks!
Paul

Hi,

I noticed some large intrest in this fix which is build 8.00.874 of
msmdsrv.exe however this fix is not publicly available through the
Microsoft website as it has not gone through full Microsoft regression
testing. If you would like confirmation that this fix is designed to
address your specific problem, or if you would like to confirm whether
there are any special compatibility or installation issues associated with
this fix, you are encouraged to speak to a Support Professional in
Microsoft Product Support Services. You can do that by calling your local
Microsoft PSS office or you could also request the fix trough me by sending
me an email at bask at Microsoft.com.This fix will be a part of sp4 of
Analysis server, the release date for this servicepack is not determined at
this moment.

Regards,
Bas
