Default Itanium Vs AMD x64 Box - 11-02-2005 , 10:50 AM

Hi,

I am doing performance testing with the new AMD x64 box with MSAS 2005 on it.
It took me about 1 hour 15 minutes to process 15 quarterly partitions. Total
rows is close to 350 Million.

i did not change any processing and memory settings on the MSAS 2005. i
processed the partitions with all the default setings.

I was able to process the same cube with MSAS 2000 in 40 minutes. I changed
the Processing and memory settings on MSAS 2000 to get the optimim
performance.

The MSAS 2005 documentation on the process and memory settings says not to
change anything without contacing microsoft.

Can you please suggest some documentation about how to optimize these
settings ?

Thaksm,

Sam.

How many RAM has your x64 box?
Are your test under AS2000 was completed on the same box under x32 Windows?

how many attributes do you have?
AS2005 is optimized to play with attributes, while in the past dimensions
could be aggregated and attributes not. in as2005 if you select the
"optimize" option (selected by default) of every attribute, then you'll have
to aggregate more data.
try to change the optimize option of non common attributes to not be
optimized.

over point... you title is "Itanium vs AMD x64"
these 2 architectures are differents.
an itanium processor is a real 64bits processor and more power full to
process data compared to 32bits and x64 processors.
