Default I get "unexpected error" when i requery an olap cube from excel - 02-21-2006 , 07:21 AM

I run SQL Server 2000 with sp4 installed for sql server as well as analysis
server. The server is part of an intranet running windows 2000 and excel 2000
for all users.

I have set up a number of cubes in analysis server. Dimensions and cubes
process without any errors. Users access the cubes from excel 2000.

I have instructed users how to set up connection from excel to the olap
cubes. This works fine for the first time. They can collapse and expand all
the dimensions as expected.

When some changes are done to the cubes in the analysis server, for instance
adding a new measure, the users always run into trouble. They open their old
excel 2000 worksheets containing the cube and try the Data menu, Update data
(may be a language problem here, excel menus are not in english), and they
get an error message:

"An unexpected internal error has occurred".

The solution then is to delete all the cubes from excel 2000 and then
reestablish them using the wizard. This works fine, but it is a lot of work
to reestablish a large number of excel worksheets.

I wonder why I get the "unexpected internal error". We have tested one
workstation instaling MDAC 2.8 sp1, but the problem is the same.

By the way, I am a novice on Analysis server. Is there some basic
configuration setting that may be wrong?

I suddenly got the idea to change security setting on Analysis Server from
Enforce on "Server" to Enforce on "Client". This solved my problem. Excel
users can ow access the cubes without reestablishing them.

Hi,

I'm not sure about MDAC 2.8 sp1 but you should install PTS from AS SP4.
After a typical SP4 run, you will find in
C:\SQL2KSP4\msolap\install\PTS two executables: ptsfull.exe and
ptslite.exe. You have to run either one on all client machines - for
query clients like Excel ptslite will do.

Hope this helps.

My posts above were wrong, and the problem re-occurred with the users. In
fact, your advice about installing the latest version of ptslite did the job.
Thanks.
