I want to extract data from a MSAS cubes and also from some shared
dimensions into a SQL table or to a flat file can you please share
ideas how to do this.

I attempted extracting data from the cube not sure what the DTS task
was expecting.

Write an MDX statement in the transform data task(source), like in a
MDX-query. If you drop a SQL Server icon in DTS and change the source to
OLEDB for OLAP 8.0 (Analysis Services) this will work.
