Default Having trouble getting started... - 07-05-2005 , 06:59 PM

I need some help getting started with Analysis Services. I tried reviewing
the groups but didn't see anything that directly matched my issue. I am
using Windows 2003 Small Business Server, with SQL Server 2000, not sure
which service pack level, although I think it's 3. I will check.

I am able to connect to the analysis manager with no problems. I could also
build a cube with no problems from a pre-existing database. I could also
connect to the Olap server from Excel from a different computer.

However, I am unable to browse any cubes either in Analysis Manager or using
the Thin Client tool in the Resource Pack.

I am connecting to the Analysis Manager snap-in as a member of the
Administrators group. The role information in the Olap database section says
Everyone has unrestricted read access.

Error screen prints are here: http://www.kafafiangroup.com/olap_errors

The cube-browser error says 'Unable to connect to cube: Unspecified error'.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Todd

Quite possibly you don't have an EVERYONE role which allows access.

Hi, thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be it.

On the Edit Database Role dialog box on the Cubes tab, all the checkboxes
are selected. A screenprint is available at
http://www.kafafiangroup.com/olap_errors. Also, on the Dimensions tab all
the options say Read/Unrestricted.

The user I'm connecting with (via Remote Desktop) is also a member of the
OLAP Administrators. Also, FYI, I installed SP4 and still have the same
issue.

If you try the 'Test Connection' thing on Data Sources, that reports that
the connection was successful.

Weird. I think I've got all the misconfiguration issues. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Todd

Hi Todd,

I had similar problems when I first installed the system, but these issues
were resolved for me once I installed Service Pack 4.

Sorry. I didn't see all of the pieces, i.e. that you can create and work
with the cube as an OLAP Administrator, but bring up the cube editor returns
"unspecified error". This indeed looks like a SP-mismatch. Could you have
made so other product installation on that server *after* you did Analysis
Services and its SP? For example, Office installs some dlls for getting cube
access.

I would look at re-installing SP4.
