Default Excel Row limitations - 05-20-2005 , 04:41 PM

I am building an OLAP solution for a client that has data in Excel Pivot
Tables exceeding the Excel Row limitations. We are investigating front end
options and the user wants an excel-like interface. Are row limitations an
issue for any of the Excel/Pivot Table plug in options; Excel PivotTable
Service, ActiveX Excel object, etc...

thanks in advance

the limitation come from Excel.
you can't add more rows/columns then supported in Excel.
but a user which filled a complete excel sheet can't work with it !!!
does your users really read 65536 rows????

why excel? what feature in excel do you use and you want to continue to use?

The Office pivottable (OWC) in standalone mode (not in excel) is more
powerfull then excel and as a better performance, but you can't add excel
calculations.

Look at reportportal (www.reportportal.com) there is a demo and this tool
represent what other tools on the market do with an olap cube. (near all the
software allow drag&drop, calculation/formulas, filtering, charting etc...)

If you use the olap technology there are no row limitation in excel .... the
concerns you need to be aware of instead is how
to construct your as environment so it performs at its best.

Check out this comprehensive article

The excel pivottable component has some limitations which are solved in
reportportal (such as drillthrough) but you also
have the excel add in for excel (free) with drillhrough and writeback and
free form reporting. However this requires a much
more recent version of Office.
