Has anybody out there managed to get this working as it does not appear to be
a feature thats available.

nope, Excel 97 it isn't supported

you should go for something liek SQL Server Reporting Services; this won't
require the installation of anything on the client machines.

Some third party Excel add-ins will work with Excel 97.
