Default Excel 12 with AS2005 - 09-24-2006 , 01:36 AM

Hi NG,

I tested these days Excel 12 with AS2005. I realized that the Pivot Table
uses
sub cubes to filter.
This has some bad side effects with some calculated members that aggregate
using LASTPERIODS (12) over a time period.
When you put the time dim in the filter and you use a calculated measure
with LASTPERIODS (12) the 12 time members are filtered out by the sub cube
and you just get the member in the filter.
In Excel XP the calculated measures work fine because Excel XP uses the
WHERE clause to filter and LASTPERIODS (12) returns 12 members.
Has anybody an idea how to work around that? Whats wrong here?

Andreas

I am not aware of any work around for this issue at present. But, I do
know that MS are very aware of this issue and that the Excel and AS team
have been working together on a resolution.

I got the impression from talking to one of the Analysis Services guys
at Tech Ed that most of the changes were on the Excel side of things,
but I don't know if we will see the fix during the beta cycle or if we
will have to wait for the RTM.

According to this recent thread in the Analysis Services MSDN Forum:
"..there had been some very significant work done in the area of
subselect in SP2." But it was subsequently clarified that the SP2 CTP is
not yet publicly available:

Re: AS2005. SubSelect vs. WHERE. What can WHERE that Subselect can't?

If you use subselect extensively, I would highly recommend the recently
released SP2 CPT1 which is available to the public. There had been some
very significant work done in the area of subselect in SP2.
...
It turns out a public release date has been pushed off a few weeks.
Sorry about the confusion.

It came up at Tech Ed this year that there were some pretty big
performance improvements coming in SP2 in the area of subqueries. But I
don't know if there are meant to be any changes to the behaviour of the
context in calculations. I think it would be a good thing, I don't
really like the way that calculations can give different results when
queried with a sub select, but I have not heard anything about this
behaviour changing.
