Default The Drill Down option - 04-08-2004 , 10:01 AM

Hi,

Can someone kindly explain what really is that Drill-Down option that we
come across when designing a cube/dimension. What exactly does it
allow/offer?

I'll be grateful if you can explain with a mini example please.

Thanks.

Dont' you mean drill through option ?

If it's drill through it means that instead of returning an aggregated
result from the fact table ... which is the "normal" behaviour using
OLAP technology you can request the exact records using the current pivot
line up.

If you have A on pages, B on rows and C and columns you will get all the
records in the fact table

When doing this Analysis goes deep down into the fact table by using an SQL
statement which you will not be shown...

So don't just fire away with this feature ...

Hi Michael,

Sorry...yes i meant the Drill Through option :-)

A few more questions for clarity. Sorry for the botheration and please
ignore the "silliness" in my question:

1) You say that if this option in used then "INSTEAD" of returning the
aggregated result, the underlying records which other wise add up to
result the aggregated result are shown. Is it then correct to infer that
we can EITHER use 'returning the aggregated result option' OR get the
individual records (i.e. the behaviour of the Drill Through option) BUT
not both. Is this assumption correct?

2) You seem to be warning about being careful when using this option

Is it becuase it's slow or is it becuase it takes too much space or ??

3) Last but not least, can you kindly give an example where once might
end up using the Drill Through option.

Many TIA.
