Default Disable a level to reduce cube's size - 02-12-2004 , 06:39 AM

Hi,

Should the property "Disabled" of a level in a cube reduce the size of
the cube if it is set to "Yes"?

It seems like it does not reduce the size of the cube...

Problem description:
We have two cubes, cube1 uses a time dimension until the day level
("Time.Day") and cube2 uses a time dimension until the minute level
("Time.Minute"). We would like to have a virtual cube above those two
cubes that shows the data with the minute level. What should be done in
order to have one time dimension in the virtual cube?

The solution that we currently use is that we created cube1 twice, one
cube with "Time.Day" (cube1a) and second cube with "Time.Minute"
(cube1b). We disabled the levels under the day level in cube1b. The
virtual cube uses the second cube (cube1b) with cube2. The problem is
that cube1b is very large (though we disabled the levels under the day
level).

Do you have any suggestion how to create a virtual cube above the two
cubes that use different time granularity without increasing the size of
the cube that includes data for the day level only?

Thanks,
Shirly.

It won't change the basic size of the cube. For most systems, the bulk of
the storage is for the fact table storage. If you had lost of aggregates,
then some might include that level -- i.e. it might change the size/number
of aggregates, but if you haven't designed any aggregates at the level,
probably not even that.

Thanks for your reply.

The cube that uses the Time.Day dimension uses ~200MB while the cube
that uses the Time.Minute dimension uses ~2GB tough both cubes use the
same fact table and the same data granularity- (we need to use the
Time.Minute dimenion in order to have the same time dimenion in a
virtual cube).
Do you have any suggestion how to disregard the unnecessary levels
(minute, hour)?

Thanks,
Shirly.
