Default Dimensions Order in the Cube Editor - 07-14-2004 , 05:36 AM

In the cube editor it is possible to change the order of dimensions
by using drag-and-drop.

What exactly are the consequences of this?

The only difference I have noticed in Analysis Server is that the order in
the Cube Editor determines the order in which the private dimensions are
processed. This can come in handy if you are trying to debug a problem with
a particular dimension. You can then drag it to the top of the list and you
don't have to wait for all other dimensions to be processed first.

Some client applications seem to pick up the order of the dimensions as
well, as you have defined them in the cube editor. So if you want to make
your user's life a bit easier you can put often used dimension at the top of
the list.

If you define a member with the same name in more than one dimension and then you use the unqualified name (without the dimension name) in an MDX query, the order dimensions are defined in the cube can affect the member returned by the query.
