Default dimension wizard error - 08-07-2003 , 10:58 AM

I have a date dimension for calendar year. I want to
create another date dimension for fiscal year. When I use
the dimension wizard to do this, I get the popup:

Unable to count the members of the 'Year' level
Unable to open the record set
Error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout Expired

I've created a lot of date dimensions and never had this
problem before. Is there a way to get around it or a way
to solve it? Thank you.

What's the difference?

Try to increase timeout in the datasource connection.

I tried increasing the timeout but it keeps getting set
back. I just created a new post on the matter. Any ideas?

The timeout for this changed in SP1. Assuming you are on SP3 and are still
experiencing a timeout (which is now set at 3 minutes) there are a couple of
options.

Workaround:
==========
For Time dimension:
1. Clone your dimension table with a different name but fewer rows (one is
more
than enough).
2. Use dimension wizard to create a dimension on the cloned table.
2. Then use dimension editor to replace the dimension table with the one you
intended to use.
3. Manually enter member counts for each levels.
4. Save the dimension.

For other dimension types:
1. At the Dimension Wizard's "Select the levels for your dimension" dialog
box,
unselect "Count level members automatically" option
2. Finish the dimension wizard.
3. Manually enter member counts for each levels using Dimension Editor
4. Save the dimension.

Workaround #2
============
Create the following key on the machine that runs Analysis Manager.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OLAP Server\Olap Manager Info
Value name: CountQueryTimeout
Value type: DWORD

Enter a reasonable timeout values (in seconds).
For example: 3600 (1 hour)
Reopen Analysis Manager
