Default Dimension Reporting not cube reporting - 05-04-2005 , 07:18 AM

Our users want some reports to be setup to do reporting on dimensions
rather than against the cubes.

Please advice the best way of setting up reporting on dimensions we
have over 36 dimensions in the database and currently use Excel Pivot
reports as a reporting tool how can we effectively setup for reporting
against dimensions can you please give some examples of doing
dimensions reporting against the food mart cube with samples of MDX or
whatever if possible in Pivot reports.

Thanks
Karen

when you refer to "reporting tool how can we effectively setup for
reporting against dimensions can you please give some examples of doing

1- Are you implying that you have a reporting engine like Crystal or
Reporting Services and you want to see how to establish custom reporting
based on either, or

2- Are you interested in a reporting OLAP client based utilities like
Intellibrowser (http://www.hungrydogsoftware.com) or like proClarity and
BusinessObjects, etc.?

For (1-) above download from Microsoft the following Reorting Services MDX
based Samples that assume you have the Food Mart 2000 Cubes ready.

James

Sorry if my question is not understood clearly.

Our users want some reports that enable them to browse the dimensions
and its attributes rather than report on measures.

I was wondering how we could do reporting just on dimensions in Excel
or from MDX

Thanks
Karen

I would just use Reporting Services to report against the dimension rdbms
tables.

Well, I would use either
- The "MDX Sample Application" that comes with Analysis Services or
-"Excel 2002/2003 Add-in for SQL Server Analysis Services" would allow you
to do that. For the AddIn here is the link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...128-9F21-475D-
88A4-4B6E6C069FF0&displaylang=en

After downloading and installing, you need to define a connection to the
Cube you are interested in, then you can browse the attributes for
dimensions, and if you are the adventerous kind, browse measures vs.
dimension attributes.

Hope this Helps.
Have a Margarita.
