Default Cube Security - 07-05-2004 , 06:08 PM

I have a cube security issue that completely baffles & annoys me.

Analysis Server is installed on a domain controller.
I have 4 databases defined, each with one cube. eg: A, B, C, D
I've created 4 security groups, one for each cube, & a user for each group.
I login as the user for cube C.
Open Excel, create a datasource to the analysis server.
I can see all 4 cubes.

I've followed the doc on database & cube roles. I can see now errors.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Ray

Make sure that the Users of each of the four groups aren't System Administrators / OLAP Administrators in the Analysis Services machine.

Cheers,
Sanka

Each user is a member of only one group, the one setup
for that database.

I'm sure that it's quite simple, I just can't find the
problem!

Thanks - Ray

Hi Ray,

I would agree with Sanka's suggestion. You need to be a member of the Administrators or OLAP Administrators group on the Server in which you have Analysis Services installed, otherwise you would not have been able to create the Cube / apply security. These are Server groups, nothing to do with Analysis Services - i.e. you right-click My Computer / Manage - Users/Groups to amend.

You will need to remove yourself from those groups on the appropriate Server before you can test the security that you have set up. Don't forget to leave an escape route though! There must be someone else available to put you back in.

Hope this helps,

Nigel.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I found the problem & fix.
Problem: this registry key was wrong
HKLM\Software\Micrsoft\OLAP Server\CurrentVersion\Security

The fix: the utility on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;241088

Btw, this is for SQL Server 7. I have 2000. But the
problem is fixed & I can now do something productive.
