Default Create static reports off Datawarehouse or Cubes? - 09-11-2006 , 11:19 AM

Any thoughts regarding a best practice? We uncovered a few issues connecting
to SSAS 2005 from SSRS 2005 and I'm wondering if most companies build reports
against a datawarehouse instead of a cube.

Hi Gary,

Most of our static or 'canned' reports seem to come directly off SQL
Databases (or Marts) using Reporting Services. I would say this is probably
the first approach to look at before building any cubes to support static
reporting.

Given the architetcure of a cube, it leans more towards data exploration
where users would want to ask many more questions of their data rather than
having just one distinct view. A cube is a large number of reports in one.

Think of cubes as more of a strategic solution as opposed to RS which could
be more of a tactical one... if that makes any sense!

For example, we have a huge corporate data warehouse with cubes, but we also
have lots of 'canned' RS reporting running against smaller sql databases and
data-marts.

Hope that helps!

I completely agree...

The problem I have is a bit unique because we currently have 30 cubes and
100 reports connecting to the cubes. The existing reports were created using
Business Objects and we want to migrating them to SSRS. The existing reports
contain significant business logic (bad, bad, bad) and I want to avoid going
down the same path we previously went down (department specific needs were
met by getting most of the data from the cubes and then putting a significant
logic in the report) by reporting off the datawarehouse or a datamart.

Thanks Kyle!
Gary

Hi Gary,

We are currently using Reporting Services reports, launched via Cube
actions from Dashboard pages, to provide supplementary information from
cubes. The 2 major scenarios in which we use them are:

- When we need print-ready report layouts.

- When we print drillthrough details for a cube.

This MSDN paper (although based on RS 2000)proved useful in addressing
some of the AS-RS integration issues:
