Default Create role on 64 bit extremely slow - 09-08-2006 , 07:48 AM

I am trying to create a new role on our QA server and it locked up the server
(unable to query or edit cubes). It ran for 1 hour prior to cancelling.
When canceled, the server became available for other activity through Mgt.
Studio. I checked other posts that suggested that the DOM/XML may bew slower
on 64 bit, but this is unacceptable. I have 3 cubes on the server, one is 8
GB (60 partitions), one is 9 GB (60 partitions), the one I am updating is 24
GB (120 partitions). I am adding a role using Mgt Studio.

Any thoughtst or ideas would be appreciated.

Can you take a look what is the size of the file master.vmp in your data
folder?

And is this on x64 or ia64?

Thanks,
Akshai

I copied empty cube (using XML script) to a different x64 server with no AS
cubes. Creating new role failed on this server also. I also tried importing
to BIDS, the dimensions imported but the importing the cube failed (locked up
BIDS). I copied same cube to 32 bit server and both create role and import
to BIDS worked - each took less than 10 seconds.

I can send XML script for database if you like.

you are not the first people which suffer this issue...

I'll implement some security is the next months on x64 servers, so I'm
really interesting to know what's appends and if all x64 servers suffer this
issue or if its a random issue.

Akshai, can you describe what type of tests we can do on our servers to help
you to identify the cause of this issue?

I tried your script on an x64 box and it works fine -- adding roles takes
seconds for me... Of course, I couldn't process your data so all my objects
were unprocessed -- perhaps you can try that too (create roles against the
database with all objects in an un-processed state).

I've seen multiple postings about this but so far our attempts to reproduce
this have failed -- so till now there isn't enough to identify the cause of
the slowdown on our side. I'm wondering if there is some sort of environment
issue affecting this.

Thanks,
Akshai

you could have a look at these threads:

AS2005 x64 vs x86 performance (20.07.2006)
AS2005 ... what is wrong with it? (17.08.2006)

A colleague had similar problems, although AFAIR the solution to his
troubles was recreating all the cubes manually by hand.

kind regards,
Gerald

I've got the same problems (see my other threads)

I was having on my server 2 OLAP databases imported from AS2000, but working
properlly (except role creation), except that any change in a role made the
whole AS server slow/ not responding (also other databases).

After I delete these databases and created new from scratch manually
everything works fast for me. Don't ask me why.
During my testing I discovered 2 things.
- in the role creation dialog don't press OK when you want to save the role,
generate the script and execute the script (5sec vs 3min ?!?!).
-In the xml's of the imported database there were properties of the objects
(attributes/dimensions) wich are not available in AS2005 but were in AS2000.
I don't remember wich one were but I presume that this "unexpected"
properties could somehow disturbe the AS.

Regards,
Radu

I'm not sure you are getting what you want when you script the role
creation. I think that will only create the role but not assign the
permissions to the cube... You should check that the roles are properly
created with appropriate permissions on the dimensions/cubes.

Thanks,
Akshai

If you create the script in the CreateRole window from manangement studio
the script generated contains the role creation and the permission creation
also.

If you create the script only from the
ManagementConsole.ObjectBrowser->Right mouse click it will create only the
create role script without the permisions.

It will be very helpfull if in the future if you can choose to create the
full script (role+permisions) also directly from the management studio
object browser.

If you create the cube script if will create also the permisions.

Radu
