Default Connection to Server Failed - Analysis Services - 03-30-2005 , 04:35 AM

Hi,
For some unknown reason, we are getting the following "Connection to Server
Failed" error message when we attempt to register our local server using MS
Analysis Services:

"Errors occurred while connecting to '<localservername>'. Cannot open
connection to Analysis server '<localservername>'. Cannot connect to the
server '<localservername>'. The server is either not started or too busy. Do
you still want to register the server?

Please note that we are running the Developer versions of MS SQL Server 2000
and MS Analysis Services with SP3 installed for both components on Windows XP
Professional.

Also note that we ARE ABLE TO REGISTER A REMOTE SERVER successfully using
Analysis Manager, but we aren't able to either register or connect to a local
server because we get the message above.

We are uttterly confused by this error message and would GREATLY APPRECIATE
any help in resolving this confusing issue as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Raj C.

So do I.

I have an Olap client built on top of XMLA SDK 1.1 (ASP .Net) and from time
to time, it looses the connection to the Olap Server (in my machine, Windows
XP Sp2), but only happens with Developer Edition of SQL Server and AS (SP3
applied).

It does not happen when using Standard Edition nor Personal Edition.

Please copy me if you get the answer from MS Support.

best regards

This is very disappointing to hear. I am new to using Analysis Manager and
have had nothing but trouble (very disappointing). I am running SQL Server
developer edition with SP3. Can anyone of the MVP talk with Microsoft for us
and find out what the deal is?

Hi Raj

This seems very strange. I have been working with AS for a long time now and
have never had these problems. Some questions:

1. Are you in the OLAP administrator user group on the computer you are
trying to connect?

2. Can you connect to this computer from a different machine having the AS
manager client?

/Martin

Hi Martin,
1. Yes my user login is a member of the OLAP administration group.
2. We are unable to register a server from a remote AS manager client. We
get the same error message.
Please note that we are installing a MS SQL 2000 Standard version of both
SQL Server and Analysis Services to see if we encounter the same problem. In
the meantime, please let us know if you have any new ideas.

Thanks,
Raj C.

I had once get this problem before and managed to solve it like this:

1. Check the analysis service bin folder property
usually it's C:\Program Files\Microsoft Analysis Services\Bin

right-click the folder, choose property, change the sharing permission and
security section.

2. Check Control Panel -> User Accounts

I will start adding the user into Administrator group to ensure it can
connect the AS, and later redefining the security, roles, etc.

Sometimes it's better to have less security than total NOT working!!
Hope this help!
