Default Clustering Analysis Services - 10-11-2005 , 12:02 PM

We are in the process of deploying AS on a Active-Passive SQL Server 2000
MSCS cluster. I understand there is a MS white paper on how to cluster it
which requires lots of manual changes. If we were to follow this paper,
would it be possible to have the AS tools shared across with other SQL
virtual servers on the same cluster? Any experiences with this configuration
are appreciated.

I don't quite have this configuration, but I do have a client that I set
up a 64-bit, active-active MSCS cluster with SQL 2000 and AS. Although
AS isn't natively "cluster aware" like SQL Server is it does work well.
I should add the SQL Server is active-active , while AS is really only
Active-passive as it currently does not support named instances so there
is only ever really one instance of AS running at any one time.

In regards to the client tools, you should be able to install them on
both virtual nodes and then register the virtual cluster node as your AS
server, but I would not recommend administering a cluster in this
manner.

All the client tools for AS work well from a remote workstation and this
is the way I would recommend using them. If you are going to the expense
of setting up a cluster I would discourage ANYONE from logging onto the
servers in the cluster unless absolutely necessary. All the admin tools
for SQL/AS work well from remote workstations and this is the best thing
to do for any server that needs maximum performance and up-time.
