Default Can't connect to Analysis Server cube... - 10-30-2005 , 04:36 PM

Hi All,

When trying to refresh the data in a excel pivot table based on an AS cube,
it fails with the error msg...

"Cannot connect to the server 'XXX'. The server is either not started or too
busy."

The excel file was originally created on the machine which the AS server
sits on and was working fine, until tested on a different workstation. The
user has been added to the AS Servers Administrators and OLAP Admins grps,
and ports 2393 & 2394 have been opened on both server and client.

Important point(?) - Server is using Developer Ed. SQL and AS. Does this
allow client connections?

Server:
SQL 2000 (Developer Ed.) sp4
AS 2000 (Developer Ed.) sp4
Windows XP sp2
Office 2003 sp1

Client:
Windows XP sp2
Office 2003 sp1

Thanks in advance,

Casey.

I think the TCP/IP port used is 2725

As all connections to AS are trusted (unless you are using http
connectivity), you must open up a lot more ports than what you have listed.

I can see I should have provided more info. We have a production install of
AS which the client can connect to through Excel (with the purpose of
refreshing data in pivotable based on a AS cube).

I have recently created a new cube on a testing and development server using
SQL(and AS) 2000 Developer Edition.

So 2 key questions:

A) Is it possible to connect to a OLAP cube from a client when the server is
SQL 2000 Developer Ed.

B) What could I possibly have not configured (given the configuration I've
performed already below).

Thanks!

Yes, developer edition allows inbound connections. I do it all of the time.
1) Are the two boxes on a common domain?
2) As the server is running XP SP2, did you disable the firewall? Is this
what you meant when you said you've openned up the ports? This is a common
mis-configuration.

If you initially setup the pivot table on the server, could you have
configured the connection to use localhost as the server name?

Try creating a new pivot table from the remote machine to test this.
