Default Can’t connect AS2k & Windows 2003 - 09-11-2006 , 05:18 AM

I installed sql server 2000 standard edition and analysis services in Windows
2003 SP2.

I patched both SP4 for sql server and also analysis services after the
installation.

Therefore, I couldn’t able to connect the sample cube "FoodMart" from
Microsoft Excel 2003 in Windows XP SP2 although i tried the provider

1) Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services 9.0
Error: The following system error occurred: No connection could be made
because the target machine actively refused it.

2) Microsoft OLE DB Provider for OLAP Services
Error: Unable to open connection, Unspecified Error

3) Microsoft OLE DB Provider for OLAP Services 8.0
Error: Unable to open connection. Cannot connect to server "OLAPTest".
OLAP server error: The operation requested failed due to security problems
(the user cold not be authenticated).

Previously the Analysis Services was installed in windows XP SP2 and it
doesn’t cause this problem. It happened when i installed into windows 2003 SP1

Please help if you have any suggestions or comments.

Thanks a lot!

Billy

have you installed the PTSLite.exe (the SP4 version) on the client station?
do you have any firewall between the station and the server?
can you access the server using the Analysis management application (for
administration purpose)?

Thanks for the response.
When i try to install PTSLite.exe in hte client station, it give the error
"Setup cannot continue because the parent product, Analysis Services, is
already installed."
The client station already installed the Analysis Services before i install
the PTSLite.exe . I used the Analysis Services in client station to remote
connect into the Olap server, it will give the error
"Cannot open connection to Analysis server 'OLAPTest'. Error in data
[Possible data corruption]".

In client station, I also tried to use the SQL Server Enterprice Manager
connect to the server, it successful connected and give no error.

There has no firewall in between the station and the server, all the windows
firewall has been disabled.

Thank you.

Billy

does your station as the SP4 installed?
if you have installed the AS applications you have to apply the SP4, if you
want to update the drivers only (so AS is not installed on the station),
ptslite.exe is enough.

can you access the server through a shared folder?
\\<server>\c$

I presume you have tested all the stations using the same login?
can you access the cube using the MDX sample application?

Both station has SP4 installed.

i also able to map the Olap server network drive with this \\<server>\c$
command.

I tested the MDX sample in 2 ways:

1) From Olap server(Win2003) connect to my work station(WinXP) cube
Successfull

2) From my workstation (WinXP) to Olap server cube
Fail
Unable to open connection.
The following system error occurred: No connection could be made because the
target machine actively refused it.

I am wondering whether is it cause by the permission of win2003. The Olap
Server doesn't join any domain yet. Therefore, my workstation is in part of
the domain.

oh...
yes, probably a permission issue, yes.
the username/password must be identical on the domain and on standalone the
server himself.
