Default BIP and Windows SharePoint Services - 07-06-2004 , 04:39 AM

Hello everyone,

I would like to install Windows SharePoint Services
on a machine (Win2003) where BI Portal is running.
Are there any known issues?

Thanks

Christoph Seck

Hi Christoph,

So far as I know on BI portal, it is based on Sharepoint 2001. It will
greatly appreciated you confirm me regarding that.

If so, you can install Windows Sharepoint Service(WSS) in Windows 2003 and
since WSS has one new architecure different from the Sharepoint 2001, the
dashboard web part can't be used directly in WSS. Furthermore, Sharepoint
2001 is not supported in Windows 2003. This kb article will introduce more
information for you concerning this.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any question. Expect to your

Hi Wei-Dong,

thanks for the fast response. BIP doesn't rely on Sharepoint 2001,
so this shouldn't be the problem. Though I think I heard somewhere
that there is a problem with running WSS and BIP on the same machine.
But may be (hopefully) I am wrong.

Hi Christoph,

As I know, there is many Business Intelligence Portals (third party or
Office XP BI portal etc). Could you be so kind to introduce to me which BI
portal you are using now? If so, perhaps I can have a research on this
whether there is any limitation for the co-exising with WSS v2.

Expect to you reply!

Hi Christoph ,

From my research on this Office XP BI portal, the only limitation I can
find now is the Office XP. For the best co-operation with WSS, Office 2003
is the best choice. Office 2003 contains some utilities and components for
WSS which will be easy and quick for your using WSS.

However, this is not a big problem. If there is no Office 2003 installed in
the server, you can install Office 2003 in your client box.

For more information regarding this, this article will introduce more info
for you.

Hi Wei-Dong ,

thanks a lot for your help. My only concern was that the installation of
the WSS may break the BI Portal,
like it does with reporting services (if you don't stick to the special
procedures mentioned in the docs troubleshooting section).
The integration with Office XP or 2003 isn't an issue yet.

Hi Christoph,

This is my fault to focus on this installation in my last post!

So far ss I know, I don't think the co-existing of your BI portal and WSS
will be broken by anything. However, in case any error thrown, don't
hesitate to let me know. That will be my pleasure to be some of assistance
for you.

Hi Wei-Dong ,

I didn't take the risk to experiment, so I set up a second website on the
server where I placed the WSS.
This approach left the BIP and the RS alone, so they surveived unharmed.
Alas, now the application I
needed the WSS for (BI Portal 2003) is throwing error messages where the
XmlUrlResolver seems to be
involved:

"ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Specified argument was out of the range of
valid values.
Parameter name: The specified value must be greater than 0.]
at System.Net.ServicePoint.set_ConnectionLimit(Int32 value)
at System.Xml.XmlDownloadManager.GetNonFileStream(Uri uri, ICredentials
credentials)
at System.Xml.XmlDownloadManager.GetStream(Uri uri, ICredentials
credentials)
at System.Xml.XmlUrlResolver.GetEntity(Uri absoluteUri, String role, Type
ofObjectToReturn)
.... "

Any idea?

Either it's a bug in .Net 1.1 or the WSS don't like to live on that second
("virtuell") website.
I guess I have to install a new testserver where I can sort things out.

Regards,

Christoph Seck

Hello Christoph,

We have tested it on our side with a new installation of BIP and WSS.
However, there is no error after the installation. For your question, I
think we need to debug and trace into the code for more details.

Looking at the nature of this issue, it would require intensive
troubleshooting which would be done quickly and effectively with direct
assistance from a Microsoft Support Professional through Microsoft Product
Support Services. You can contact Microsoft Product Support directly to
discuss additional support options you may have available, by contacting us
at 1-(800)936-5800 or by choosing one of the options listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=sz;en-us;top. If this is not
an urgent issue and your would like us to create an incident for you and
have Microsoft Customer Service Representative contact you directly, please
send email to (remove "online." from this no Spam email address):
mailto:dscommhf (AT) online (DOT) microsoft.com with the following information,

*Include "Followup: <Tomcat IssueID>" in the email Subject.
*Location of the post
*Subject Line
*First Name, Last Name
*MSDN Subscriber ID
*Company name (if any)
*Phone number
*e-mail address

In my opinion, I suggest you install a new test server for it first. If the
problem is still there, you may contact PSS for further help from a SQL BI
support engineer.

Thanks very much.
