Default BI portal problem. Ideas and suggestions badly needed! - 02-20-2006 , 06:38 AM

Hi people,

We've been developing a BI portal for the company Intranet and the
problem here is that not all of the users, approx. 200, has an Analysis
Manager installed on their PC. Everytime other users try to access the
portal, the Multidimesional Connection prompts because it cannot locate
the original analysis server connected to that file.

All we want is to avoid the Multidimensional Connection dialog on
popping and for us not to install or configure whatever on those 200
PCs 'coz that would really take us time.

I hope you get what I mean.

Do anyone has a workaround for this?

Suggestions/Ideas are gladly appreciated!

There are some caveats to using Analysis Manager as an end-user client tool,
eg:

Sorry. The cube browser was designed as an DBA utility; not as an end-user
query tool. Thus it is missing many of the commonly requested things that
you would expect from a true front-end tool, such as sorting, printing, etc.

Analysis Manager is an Admin tool, you should not use it (or it's
browser control) for end user browsing. The browser in AM is pretty
limited anyway

Have you seen the BI Portal sample application from MS? It is based on
Office Web Components (OWC) and Sharepoint.

Or something like thin slicer?
http://richardlees.com.au/Home_files...cerHistory.htm

Mosha has a list of third party thin clients at
http://www.mosha.com/msolap/util.htm#ThinClients

Reporting Services reports are a great way of distributing reports with
fixed layouts. (But not really suitable for dynamic analysis)

We are also creating a portal.

We are using the Reporting Services Intranet site as the backbone.
Reports from cubes and reports from databases and Excel Spreadsheets
are
available in folders via Windows Security.

The latest Excel 2003 add-in for SSAS 2005 is now available from MS.
It has the look and feel of the cube browser in SSAS.

I recommend looking into ProClarity or any other Olap front end tool.
