Default AS2005 Memory Questions - 11-07-2006 , 07:58 PM

Hello,

I found others with the same problem as me regarding Analysis Services 2000,
but I am hoping to get some information on Analysis Services 2005.

Today our analysis services server "locked up" It would not accept any
connections. Looking in the event viewer, I found the following error:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSSQLServerOLAPService
Event Category: (289)
Event ID: 2
Date: 11/7/2006
Time: 2:41:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: IQOLAPA
Description:
The system is out of memory.

The machine has 8 GB of physical RAM. Looking at the task manager, only
approx 4 gigs were being used at the time of the problem.

My questions are:
1) What is the max amount of RAM analysis services 2005 can be configured to
use?
2) What do I have to do to the system to make it use that?

Thanks for any information anyone might be able to provide.
-Ryan

do you use x64 editions (both windows & SQL)?
if no, then you are limited to 3Gb

Hi Ryan,

In a 32-bit environment, all processes have access to 2GB of virtual memory
(backed by either physical RAM or paging file) allotted to them for their
use; so AS has a 2GB memory limit imposed by the OS; this can be increased
to 3GB by implementing the /3GB switch in the boot.ini.

We could adjust a setting called LowMemoryLimit from its default value of
75% (meaning 75% of the 2GB allotted to AS) to 50%. The LowMemoryLimit
effectively marks the point in memory utilization at which Analysis
Services will activate a cleaning process to start cleaning out memory as
needed. Lowering this value is that we can encourage AS to more actively
manage its memory, and thereby limit the likelihood of it using up its
allotted memory.

You could use the management studio to connect to the SSAS instance and
change the configuration.

Hope this will be helpful.

Hello,
Thank-you for the responses.

Wei, after reading your post, I have taken 2 courses of action. I have added
the /3GB switch to the boot.ini, as well as decreased the "LowMemoryLimit"
from 75 to 50. I will monitor the situation, and if I am still running into
trouble, I will post back.

The hardware analysis services is running on is X64, however only the 32bit
windows and SQL server are installed. In your opinion, would it be worthwile
to purchase the x64 Windows and SQL server? How much memory is this edition
able to use? Will it provide a noticable difference in performance between
the current edition?

Thanks,
-Ryan

Hello Ryan,

The Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 edition will support 1TB physical memory.

Since you have 8GB memory, I think you would better to use the x64 edition
to get the full use of the memory.
