Default AS2005 end user access tools - 12-08-2005 , 01:59 PM

Any idea when Excel is going to support connecting to 2005 cubes?

next release... Excel 12
you can access the cubes using excel 2003, but the display of the dimensions
is not optimal.

Excel can connect now, using OLE DB for OLAP 9:

Subject: Re: 2005 Analysis Services and End User Access

Users can certainly connect to AS 2005 cubes via Excel; but only the
next version (Office 12, Beta likely late this year) will specifically
support new AS 2005 features like KPI's. Some of the 3rd-party OLAP
client tools will support AS 2005-specific features sooner. Mosha's
MSOLAP info pages provide a list of Analysis Services client software:

It means that Excel 2003 displays all the hierarchies in the cube in the
flat list, not grouped by dimensions and not grouped within dimension by
display folders.
People who use Excel 2003 and below to connect to AS2005 cubes sometimes
find it easier to introduce naming convention in hierarchy names to include
dimension name as well - to get the hierarchies grouped together by name.
Otherwise - Excel 2003 works just fine with AS2005 cubes - I use it every
day and did so for the last few years
